Playing games on a large screen aint always a great idea

Recently I've moved to a larger desktop screen in my home setup. 27inch only so by no means massive but because I'm sitting relatively close to it as it is a high resolution screen it does mean that it takes up a much larger area of my normal desktop field of view.

Ever since moving to the larger screen, when playing games with lots of first person motion type games, I've found it can quickly induce motion sickness. This is something new to me in terms of gaming. I have experienced it with VR headsets but never with a desktop setup.

The game that I've found to be most problematic is Warhammer Space Marine as it's primarily a console port with a very narrow field of view. It's really intended to be viewed from further back, not typical for PC games. There are also no options to tweak the FOV in this game so I can only play for 10-20 minutes before I start to feel sick.

Having read up a bit on this, it seems clear that it is because the majority of my field of view is now taken by the larger screen. My options are really only to sit further back from the screen so my eyes can pick up more of the static area around the screen so my brain registers that I am really not moving as in the game. It's a weird thing the human brain indeed when combined with different signals from your eyes and ears. There is clearly a threshold to this and so tweaks are needed to find a comfortable combination.

Others have suggested things like a fan pointed at you to simulate air movement which can help tweak/fool your senses to avoid motion sickness.

For now, for the FPV type games where the problem is severe I have simply started launching the games in a windowed mode instead. This allows me to keep the resolution high and center the window in my monitor without needing to move back further from the screen. I find the result effectively the same but avoids the hassle of repositioning everything. For games that are much more static i.e. strategy type games it is ok to play full screen and high resolution without any brain hacks it seems.

Screens are clearly getting bigger and allowing gaming to become far more visually immersive but how you ensure this remains a comfortable experience for players might actually become a physical limitation in the future.

I've never heard of someone getting motion sick playing a game on a phone.
